Current Flows.... A different season for sure. Most of the fish have returned to the lake to prepare for their fall runs. It was a hit and miss season, one day we would get into some and the next they were lock jaw. No consistency to the bite and their holding areas. The fall will bring a new season, see you then.
A Keen Eye with good polarized sun glasses for protection and to spot active fish are must. These will also help you decide on how to approach feeding fish and safe wading.
Experience is the key for traditional fly and spey fishing added success. During the winter months and colder water, patience is a must as takes may be subtle at times and look for more soft pulls on the hangle, so position yourself strategically in the river. Allow me help you become a better angler. Watch for scheduled fly and spey classes and schools in the area, or call and set up a personalized day of instruction and a wade or float fly & spey fishing trip.

A
properly presented
offering that is drifted directly into their cone of
vision
will almost always trigger a take or a strike.
There were plenty of fish up river in a 1/2 mile
stretch, let's use the number 300 for instance. Now
figure
a conservative kill of 20 per day,
that's 200 dead and gone in less then 2 weeks.
Leaving
100 fish or less. Help preserve our fishery by not
killing
the fish steelhead & salmon!

Deerfield River
Fishing Report: 05/09/12
|
Current Flows: Upper sections have been fishing fair
with fish beginning to spread out. River changes and lower flows are making for an enjoyable time out, especially since there are many new fish holding areas to be explored. Lower sections are are fishing good as fish plantings should be increasing throughout the month of May.
Flies & Tips
Spring brings the natural cycle of rainbow reproduction, Walt's Egg, early stones, flesh patterns with an orange/ cheese estaz wrap or two and small pattern egg sucking leaches. Nymphs and wets like the pheasant tails and hare's ears are beginning to produce erratically as this season too is off to an early start with the hatches. Streamers such as the Mickey Finn and Black Nosed Dace swung slowly in to holding and gravely areas will also be a good bet. After the spawn, these rainbows will turn to larger meals, wooly bugger time. Egg Patterns and Early Stone Fly Information click here. Practice and Promote Catch & Release Only!
Early-Mid Summer proven fish getters, are the dry crane, adams wulffs, black ants and stimulators. Wets and wooly buggers, larger soft hackles and spider flies in natural colors. Great time to spey and swing flies.
Summer Dog Days requires adjustments to be made in presentation and depths. When there are no rising trout or swirls just beneath the surface, go deep from mid morning into early evening and then change up your tips to raise your fly into the upper 1/5 of the water column or full float to approach risers. Once you find the proper depth zone for that area, stay with it!
A Keen Eye with good polarized sun glasses for protection and to spot active fish are must. These will also help you decide on how to approach feeding fish and safe wading.
Experience is the key for added success, especially this time of the season. Allow me help you become a better fly fisherman. Watch for scheduled fly and spey classes and schools in the area, or call and set up a personalized day of instruction and a wade or float fly fishing trip.

Read and be sure to
understand the tide charts and water heights. A
must is to
ask local shops about safety issues on your planned
fishing
spot. Good planning can result in a fun and safe
trip. Pick
the tides you want to fish. Good Luck and fish
smart! If
you’re new to the Cape or a seasoned angler,
PFD’s are good investment to insure your
safety for
future fishing and be sure to scope out the area in
the
daylight to see what hazards you may be up against.
